What is the next question?

You've been to city council, you've heard from a young person about what is going on in the hood, what do you think should happen next?

How do we fire the City Manager, Chief of Police and the Mayor. After hearing from the City Manager, stating that Finney did no wrong by killing kiwane Carrington. We need to find out what the City Manager's duties are and use them against him to boot him out. ASAPPPPP

I think this community needs to get some trustworthily people that REALLY have the communities best interest at heart to apply or run for decision making positions (posted on city website)open for this city. It seems they have secret people/committees within our community; we need to get secret people within their community. What I’m saying is, I feel as if what was said by people really came from their hearts. However, I felt the entire city counsel didn’t care what was said and they didn’t hear them and don’t plan to take any actions. For the City manager to say what he said was ludicrous and it made me believe that no matter what was said or who said it, it went in one ear and out of the other. Nothing is going to change what they have been doing for years unless the community changes and start sticking together. In addition, promote voting (VOTE OR DIE) so that the mayor can be voted OUT! Then maybe we can get some people fired that misuse their power or F-up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A speaker at Tuesday's city council meeting basically asked this exact question, "where do we go from here?", and that wasn't answered when the city council responded. I do think they generally have good intentions but we still need to push them to get anything to happen. So I think the next step is: how do we get some progressive legislation in front of the council? Several demands have come up over the past few weeks--fire Finney or at least put him on leave, a civilian review board, change the use of force policy--maybe we need to research which of those can be addressed by the council and contact specific members to see if they're willing to introduce the bill. And then, if no one is willing, there's always petitions; it shouldn't be that hard to get enough signatures, especially if we use social networking tools to get the word around.

Once again I was glad to have attended the meeting at the City Hall. I strongly feel that the Black community should stick together. I believe that they think the situation will die out or the people will get tired. I also feel that Chief Finney should be on suspension as well. Since he was there and being the Chief the situation should have never turned out the way that it did. Given the new information with Finney serving on the same board with state officers that are participating in the investigation, there needs to be a civilian review board. Finney should be fired. The mayor's position should also be taken into consideration. We need someone in position that is not afraid to take a stand against injustices. We need someone who cares about the Black community. Maybe a riot is what the City of Champaign and the Champaign Police are asking for. What will it take to get their attention so they will act on behalf of the Kiwane Carrington/Black community?

I apologize for my late response but this week was crazy and got really out of hand. Just another set back for the black community that has no type of unity on this campus. You can't spell community with without "UNITY" but our black people on the U of I campus just had another setback and I am very embarrassed at the moment of the action our people took in this current situation.

Dr. Patterson and classmates, to be honest I do not know what the next question is. I don't have a clue. When I was at the U.R Movement kick off this weekend the kids were so happy that we were there and we talked about Kiawne, his name came up a lot but the kids also don't know what's coming and neither do I? I tried to answer this question over and over again but just like yesterday I have no answer.

But what I did learn from the reading is that we need to get the City Council to "make all plans available to the community" while developing a theoretical foundation for the problem. We need cooperation the most and to come to the terms of planning as a communicative action which in the readings was one of the most important things I read; "educate citizens on issues of planning processes and practice" which I can name two things that the community needs to be educated on "The Use of Force Policy in Champaign" and the "Zero Tolerate Policy" as well. We can also try the approach using the "Planning Cell" method.

I guess now that I write all of this information I can pose a question. Why was the Chief of Police, Chief Finney there at the crime scene when Kiwane was shot? I did not know that the Chief of Police response to call about burglary, if there was even a call.

Where do we go from here? GOOD, HARD, VERY DIFFICULT QUESTION. We have argued and made ourselves present, but we must keep our presence in the spotlight. We need to form committees and groups who are really going to go to bat for the community. Some names mentioned in the meeting on Tuesday do not really represent the Black Community as a "whole". It really needs to be folk who are part of the North End and have always been. These are the people who can really state facts of the treatment of black youth (Blacks period) in our community. The outsiders looking in cannot tell the "whole" story.

We need new people in new positions that's for sure. We need a much stronger outside force to also come in and review the entire situation dating back long before Kiwane's death. Involvement from people in high positions outside of the community, outside of Illinois to help us make the right choices, the right decisions is a "MUST", especially if the community feels no justice.

This is a good question. I feel this a question for the community at large to answer. There has to be a drive, motivation, and non corrupt space that the community can gather in. In establishing this next question, there must be an emphasis on what is what and evaluating the cost of getting there where the people are unstoppable. In reaching toward future success, maintaining a space where trust and appreciation for culture is essential. The next question is where do we go from here in sustaining a community? As Gurstein notes, it is important for citizens to be involved in the progression of a state. Therefore, with involvement and creativity a new question can be born.

This is a very good job. What should we do next or what we believe should be done next should be the question. What we believe should happen should be firing the Chief of Police. I dont know if it will ever get to the point to where we will fire the mayor, but the chief of police is an option i think can happen. Also the community need to stop getting the treatment they get from the police as well. This zero tolerance policy is not what is going to help the community. That also starts in the city hall until they hear the message.

The city council should go out to the community and really talk to the citizen there. The Council should see how to improve the hood in the Champaign area. The city should let the community feel that they are empowered with the destiny by putting them on a committee to work with the police. Make them feel as if the city cares. They may not really care but you have to give the hood SOMETHING. People want to feel as if they are in charge of their life and I really don't think the hood feels the control.

I'd like to propose to make a short documentary of what we have discussed in this class. I have been concerned about how I can contribute to this conversation when I am not a permanent champaign resident. I would like to make a social documentation of the things that we have discussed in class in relation to the community that we are so close to. One of the difficulties with social activism is documentation. Because I am a librarian I am interested in making sure that information is available and that the progress that we make intellectually does not go un counted.

I'd like to make a video that we can have as a representation of recent events. A video where we can discuss what community informatics is and how we use that term in relation to how we affect the world we live in.

The films we have watched have been very interesting think its important to have a visual response to our discussions so that we have a spot in history.

So what is the film about... the people we are who we have talked to and an explanation of what community informatics is?
especially in relation to what is going on in the state of our comunity.
